The fact that that's a clever line emphasizes the symmetry. A bottle of gin is like love until we shift our perscpective. The line largely plays off the image of a lonely fellow in a barroom--looking for love, finding only gin ... and disappointment. The song is a sort of <i>we need the eggs</i> joke. For the joke to work, my point about the basic symmetry of simile has to stand. Actually, come to think of it, the <i>we need the eggs</i> joke relies on a norm about how far a simile can go.
